Liquid have announced that they have completed the signing of Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo from MIBR. The Brazilian veteran will fill the spot left vacant by Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken, who stepped down from the team after the IEM Global Challenge, in December.
FalleN is expected to become the team’s primary AWPer, adding more solutions to a squad that already has two versatile players who can use the ‘Big Green’ in Keith “NAF” Markovic and Jake “Stewie2K” Yip.
“Joining an organisation like Team Liquid feels like an amazing accomplishment,” FalleN said. “I feel that in Liquid I will be able to accomplish a lot of things.
“I chose Liquid because I played against them many years, I know their strengths and I know how well they can play. I think that, with my abilities and the way I think about the game, I can be helpful.
“I think that what I bring to the team are my capabilities with the AWP. Liquid are known for not having a specific AWPer for a long time and still succeeding, but it feels like the team was looking for someone to fulfil that role, and I am very happy that they chose me to do that.”
FalleN added that while he’s looking forward to helping the team with the tactical knowledge he has gathered since he began his career, he doesn’t know if he will take over the captaincy from Stewie2K.
“I think that I understand a lot about the game because I’ve been playing it for so long,” he noted. “I know how to understand the meta and how the game is evolving, even though some people might say that I might not understand the game anymore.
“I don’t think that is the case. I have a lot of confidence in my abilities in that regard. With the knowledge that I have and with the knowledge that the other players in Liquid have, we can combine those things and create a stronger unit.
“But I’ll be just as fine if the team wants me to just focus on the AWP, for example.”
The 29-year-old will be hoping to kick-start his career with Liquid after enduring a frustrating period with MIBR. The Brazilian, a two-time Major champion, won just one LAN title in over two years and stepped down from the roster in September in protest against the decision by the organisation to remove Fernando “fer” Alvarenga, Epitacio “TACO” de Melo and coach Ricardo “dead” Sinigaglia.
Liquid will also hope that FalleN‘s arrival will mark the start of a new chapter. After winning several LAN titles and the $1 million Intel Grand Slam (IGS) Season 2 prize in 2019, the team struggled for form in 2020, picking up just one title, from ESL Pro League Season 11 North America. They also parted ways with longtime member and in-game leader Nick “nitr0” Cannella, who has since switched to VALORANT.
In Liquid, FalleN will reunite with Stewie2K, who was his teammate in SK and MIBR for eight months between April and December 2018. The North American was then transferred to Liquid as MIBR returned to a full Brazilian roster.
FalleN will make his first appearance for Liquid later this month in the BLAST Premier Global Finals, scheduled for January 19-24. The North American team are also slated to compete in the BLAST Premier Spring Groups, the IEM Katowice Play-In Stage and ESL Pro League Season 13.
